Women's National History Month

  

National Women’s History month was founded when a group of women from Santa Rosa, California began to advertise the achievements of women. They formed a group called the National Women’s History Project (NWHP).
The NWHP successfully lobbied Congress to designate the month of March as National Women’s History Month. 

 

 

  
 

The NWHP realized that girls and women had few role models. To address this issue, they believed that outstanding female figures should be recognized and given proper exposure. No more than 3% of texts at the time had content devoted to women. This gave the perception that women did nothing important, and by association, were not important at all when it came to practical and scholastic matters.  



  

 

25 years later, vast strides have been taken to recognize women with outstanding achievements. From athletes to political activists, women the world over are recognized during Women’s National History Month.
